The Night Trotsky Came to Dinner

A new 13 minute comedy docudrama about a legend in the director's family. Shot in a variety of formats: B&W Super 8, 16mm and digital video, the author playfully parodies the genres of historical fiction, documentary, and early silent Yiddish film. The film features actress/singer Vivian Kanner of Berlin’s local Yiddish band 'Jewels‘ (with Sharon Brauner), who delightfully dishes out slapstick scenes reminiscent of Yiddish theater and film diva Molly Picon.

Every family has its own fictions: why are they invented, what social values do they reflect and how do later generations interpret them? How is political identity formed - passed down, integrated or rejected - within one family? The tale traverses the Pale, the New World and back to the Old World, from the Trotskyite grandparents, to the Maoist parents to the filmmaker herself, a Jewish post-feminist. This short is a preview of a feauture-length docudrama in progress.
